The Self-Care Handbook for Syrian Men in Germany is based on the experiences of Syrian men living in Germany, supplemented by the perspectives of sisters, mothers, wives and daughters. It reflects the practical and emotional challenges they have faced, which include feelings of isolation, difficulties adapting to the German culture, experiences of discrimination, language barriers, uncertainty about the future, unemployment, bureaucracy, and shifting roles within the family. The Handbook does not offer generic solutions to common problems. Rather, it can be a guide to identifying the strengths and resources that an individual possesses, and which they can use to face and overcome difficulties. The goal of the Handbook and the other tools provided on this website is to help Syrian men better understand their feelings and emotions, as well as their bodies’ reactions to stress factors, and to support them in developing strategies depending on their individual needs and resources. These tools were developed in 2020-2021 by the International Organization for Migration (IOM) in Germany with funding from the German Federal Commissioner for Migration, Refugees and Integration.

Support Services

Similar to the way you consult a doctor when you have a high fever, there are cases when support services could help you deal with difficult phases in your life. Here is a list of resources and organizations in your area that can support you with a variety of challenges. You can filter the list based on what kind of support you are looking for, and by location. If you do not see organizations near you, you can find online services listed here as well!

Note that this is only a selected list of organizations in Germany; if you don’t find what you’re looking for on this list, that doesn’t mean it’s not out there. Please note that these organizations and services are independent from IOM, and IOM cannot guarantee you an appointment. Please check each website and/or contact the organization for the most accurate, up-to-date information about services and language availability, as this list is not updated regularly.
